NDA (National Defence Academy)

NDA is a defence Academy of the Indian Armed Forces located at Khadakwasla, Pune, where the cadets of three services, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force are trained together to join any of the respective services. NDA is a national level exam conducted twice a year by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). Approx. 450,000 applicants apply every year, out of which only 6,300 candidates are called for next round of interview. At final stage, only 70 candidates are accepted in Air Force, 42 in Navy and 208 candidates in Army.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. Candidates must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal, a subject of Bhutan or an Indian origin person migrated from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and East African Countries of Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zaire, Malawi and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
  2. A Tibetan refugee who came over to India with the intention of permanently settling in India before 1st January 1962
  3. Only male unmarried candidates can apply

Age Limit

Minimum age limit required is 16.5 years

Maximum age limit required is 19.5 years

Eligibility for Army Wing: For Army Wing, a candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent exam conducted by the State Education Board or a recognized university.

Eligibility for Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy: For Air Force and Naval of NDA and 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme, a candidate should have passed XII or equivalent exam with Physics and Mathematics as on of the subjects.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Candidates need to qualify NDA written examination in order to get to the next round i.e. the SSB interview. Qualifying all the rounds gets you into NDA

INTELLIGENCE AND PERSONALITY TEST

The SSB interview is conducted by Service Selection Board and consists of the two-stage selection process - stage I and stage II. Only those candidates who clear the stage I also called screening are permitted to appear for stage II.

The details are:

  1. Screening: Stage I comprise of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests such as Picture Perception * Description Test (PP&DT) and so on. The candidates are shortlisted basis on performance in OIR Test and PP&DT.
  2. Interview: Stage II comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the final day Conference. These tests continue for over 4 days. The details are available on the website joinindianarmy.nic.in. The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different investigators viz. The Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist. There is no separate weightage for each test. The assessors allot marks basis considering the performance of the candidate holistically in all the tests. In addition, marks for Conference are also allotted on the basis of initial performance of the candidate in the first three techniques and decision of the Board. All these have equal weightage.

The various tests of IO, GTO, and Psychology are designed to bring out the presence of Officer Like Qualities and their susceptible trainability in a candidate. Accordingly, candidates are Recommended or Not Recommended at the SSB.
